Paweł Sakowicz

Speculating about dance virtuosity is a type of reflection that can be based on experience but isn’t necessarily empirically verifiable. The aim of such speculation is to frame an ideal image of dance virtuosity by drawing on predictable economic, political and meta-humanistic changes. A characteristic feature of speculation on dance virtuosity is risk-taking in constructing radical scenarios on the politics of desire.

Paweł Sakowicz is a choreographer and dancer. He graduated from the University of Warsaw with a degree in political studies and holds an MA in performance and choreography from the London Contemporary Dance School. His most recent works include „Bernhard”, „TOTAL” and „Jumpcore”. He has collaborated with choreographers and visual artists, and worked as a choreographer in a number of theatre productions. A recipient of an honorable mention at the 22nd National Competition for the Polish Contemporary Play Staging, he was awarded a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and received a nomination for the 2016 “Polityka” Passports in the “Theatre” category.

Aurora Lubos

”I am interested in a man who is safe, but unwilling to accept others who flee from war, conflict, oppression, death, hunger. I am interested in the situation of conflict, danger and suffering. And what this satisfied, satisfied, Western European man would feel for people whose everyday reality is the struggle for life”

One of the elements of the performance is the documentation of the performance Z wodą, which took place in October 2015 on the beach in Sopot, on the Solidarity Day with Refugees. It was the artist’s comment on the matter of immigrants dying out at sea, the transfer of images into Polish, tangible realities.

Can a journey to the impossible really happen?

Six dancers in the poignant world of Georges Bataille, a French writer, philosopher and critic of contemporary culture, one of the few thinkers of the past century who had the courage to ask uncompromising and unconditional questions about the sense and form of human existence

The philosopher challenges us, and takes us to a place where “all turbulent emotions merge into one”. His paradoxical philosophy points towards dance with a silent gesture. As we dance, we discover terror and new spaces concealed within its depth. As we dance, we jump into emptiness and discover laughter. As we dance, we plunge into the dark riddle of erotism until we come across “the world of the festive, of kings and gods”. Dance becomes a test of sovereignty by expressing, both materially and intangibly, the uniquely dramatic nature of Bataille’s thoughts and his key question: Can we become alive again?

The project is based on the following writings by Georges Bataille: Inner Experience, The Tears of Eros, The Accursed Share and Erotism. These became the subject of a multidirectional study in which we used our method of working with dreams and the unconscious developed since 2005 under the project Taniec śniącego ciała (Dance of the Dreaming Body). The method is a creative synthesis of techniques inspired by Carl Gustav Jung’s analytical psychology and Arnold Mindell’s process oriented psychology, as well as our own improvisation and meditation techniques which we have been developing for many years research work.

During the technique and improvisation workshop, we will explore the role of weight and body mass in motion, and we are going to examine their direct impact on the quality and dynamics of dance; for this purpose, we will use the “release” technique as well as working with a partner in improvisation.

The aim of the workshop will be to integrate the energy flowing in the body to greater economy of moving, and better quality and awareness of the body.

In addition, the workshop will be accompanied by live music performed by Radek Duda; the combination of both live music and exercises helps better engagement of participants during the workshop, and allows for a more intense insight and understanding of our body during dance. My technique used during the classes is somehow a result of many techniques and experiences gathered for the last 25 years of work in Dada as well as through inspiring meetings with many other choreographers, dancers and theatre directors.

Why Don’t You Like Sadness

It can be seen as a subtle journey through a maze of emotional states, a journey comparable to moving from one room to another. Each room is suffused with a different shade, and every now and then, when we happen to enter a room, we can find out again, how damn sad we’re feeling then. That sadness somehow blankets us, and we don’t feel like coming out from underneath the blanket. That melancholia makes us slow down so that we could carefully take a look at everything around, but while undergoing that state, at the same time, we’re trying to keep our distance so that with new energy we could open another door.

Description:

The workshop of Christina Ciupke and Ayse Orhon will introduce practices and composition principles which they used and developed during the working process of At Close Distance.

Working in duos, through moving and being moved they will propose different qualities of encounters. With focused movement material the workshop aims to explore the intensity of physical proximity and distance.

Open for everybody who is interested in exploring movement, gaze and kinesthetic awareness.

Biographies

Christina Ciupke:
As choreographer and performer Christina lives in Berlin. She develops her projects with artists from the field of dance and other art fields. Within that specific areas and situations arise where closeness and distance, intimacy, sense of time and the being together of audience and performers are constantly negotiated. A longstanding collaboration unites her with the choreographers Nik Haffner, Mart Kangro, filmmaker Lucy Cash, the visual artist Lars Ø Ramberg, the composer Boris Hauf and dramaturge Igor Dobričić. From 2003 to 2004 Christina was a guest artist at the Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM). 2013 she obtained a Master of Arts in choreography (AMCh) at the Amsterdam School of the Arts. Her works tour nationally and internationally. In the yearbook Tanz 2014 Christina received the award Hoffnungsträgerin along with 33 other artists. From 2016 she is with Tanzfabrik Berlin involved as artist in the European network apap – advancing performing arts project.

Ayse Orhon:
Ayşe Orhon works as a performer since 2001. She has danced with Aydın Teker and Emmanuelle Huynh also collaborated with visual artist Gülsün Orhon. She is a graduate of Artez (HKA) in 2001 and the Master of Choreography program in Amsterdam (AHK). Orhon performed her works in diverse festivals in Europe such as Can You Repeat? (2007), hava (2009), ÇOK (2010), folk (2011). Since 1997 Orhon has been working in the field of movement and movement therapy. She has been a guest lecturer at CNDC Angers and at two Dance Departments in Istanbul since 2002.

The workshop will consist of a short warm up, leading to basic contact/partnering work.

The main focus will develop into a playful exploration of manipulation of the body through the use of live video techniques.

Luke Baio trained at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and London Comtemporary Dance School. From 2001-2006 he was a member of Richard Alston Dance Company. In 2007 he moved to Vienna to collaborate with Dominik Grünbühel. Alongside his work with Dominik he has been a member of Liquid Loft/Chris Harring since 2007. His additional interest in scenography has also been used not only for his own productions with Dominik but also he has created scenography for Alexander Gottfarb, Radek Hewelt, Bankett, Charlotta Ruth & Clélia Colonna.

Dominik Grünbühel:
He studied contemporary dance in Vienna and in London at the London Contemporary Dance School – The Place. Since 2001 he has been working as a freelance dancer and performer in Vienna. He studied digital art at the University for Applied Arts and received his diploma in 2016.

During the past years he has been concentrating on his own works in the field of choreography, Video and Projection. Working with Charlotta Ruth, Michael Bruckner, Bankett, Konic Thtr (Barcelona) and Rupert Huber, Judith Unterpertinger & Katherina Weinhuber amongst others. With his solo work “I am the Mockingbird” Dominik toured Estonia, Hungary and Sweden.

At Close Distance

When you come closer, all my senses are caught by the intensity of your physical presence. When you retreat, the impact of our encounter remains. As the distance between us increases, my focus shifts from looking to imagining. The attention is bridging the space between us.

Christina Ciupke and Ayşe Orhon, knowing each other from the Master Programme for Choreography at the AHK Amsterdam, got together to create a choreography based on an earlier work – the duet, kannst du mich umdrehen, which Christina Ciupke and Nik Haffner developed in 2011. In At Close Distance, the two choreographers excavate the past of this physical encounter. While the movements are reduced, the intensity of the play between proximity and distance increases. With uncanny precision, Ciupke and Orhon work on velocity, friction, mass and stillness, where the intimacy of the encounter is randomly disrupted by sounds breaking the silence.

With sheer delight for playing and equipped with a pinch of self-irony, two talking heads introduce their concept before inviting their bodies to join them. Out of nothing, Luke Baio and Dominik Grünbühel create a bombastic, a megalomanic show that makes your body vibrate – yet always ready for an elegant fail.

The subjects addressed in this compact-compatible performance by the two dancers draw from their respective biographies and experiences in the field of contemporary dance: recipes for success, naked skin as projection space for every form of fantasy imaginable and well-proven elements of theatre are brought together to create a choreography that crosses the borders of artistic fields and forms of artistic expression.
