The Georgian traditional dance workshop was held in Zawirowania Dance Theater, on the 26th of June, with the mentorship of the multimedia artists and dancers Khosilita (Nini Khositashvili) and Mariam Sakvarelidze. Its main goal is to introduce a wide audience to the unique dance characteristic of Georgian culture and to develop new expressive forms of the body based on its elements.

Within the framework of the workshop, the audience got to know the basis of Georgian-Caucasian dance in detail, ancient reports or records, history, and video material, which fostered the creation of a general impression on the participants regarding the antiquity, uniqueness, and individuality of the culture.

We talked about the development of Georgian dance between generations, how the movements have changed over time, and in what form they have reached us today, the audience learned about the history of modern Georgian dance.

The practical part of the workshop included studying the basic elements of Georgian-Caucasian dance, observing it, developing movements, and understanding the emotional line behind it. During the workshop, the participants could technically study a specific combination of Georgian dance and then adapt their own modern style through the tasks.

The body as a mediating element, the connection between the earth and the sky –
A bodywork based on Release and Alexander technique, as well as a contemporary
language of movement and a floorwork method that has been developed over
years, with a focus on relaxation and coordination between breathing and dynamics
of movement.

The impulse to move comes from the center, the source from which all
energies flow. Through the conscious use of muscular relaxation, the body can raise without exertion, it can release and flow inner energies in order to create an „economics” of the body that strengthens the performers expression, brings the quality/dynamics of their movements into focus and aggravates their inner musicality.

There are no “recipes” for choreographing. Even though a personal signature is
being developed over time, each piece remains a new challenge. Approaching
various subjects from different angles results in the search for an „original“
movement language in correspondence to the subject, in the search for adequate
compositional means needed to develop an inner logic of composition, the
dramaturgically important inner „threads“, as well as, to convey own ideas and
visions, to give „worlds“ to others, and to communicate selves nonverbally.

The focus is on contemporary dance, dance as an expression, as non-verbal
communication and reflection of our era, our here and now…

In Making Sense you will learn to apply tools and methods that will help you to better listen to your own artistic voice and amplify the key elements that make your ideas yours. Artist Eilit Marom, a member of Helicopter Artist Collective and Project Space in The Hague (NL) shares how to structure the performance from the inspiration point. She will combine exercises and tasks together with feedback discussions in order to offer a relevant yet playful starting point for a new creative process.

Eilit Marom (1986 Haifa, Israel) is an artist and choreographer based in The Hague, she works between Israel and the Netherlands in the field of dance and visual art. As an independent artist, she created projects that expose performance practices as valuable experiences which connect people with their physical self-expression and their environments. In the form of performances and immersive spaces, Eilit consciously positions her public in settings that facilitate serendipity, intending for a real encounter between them and the work. Her work is inspired by non-verbal communication and the study of interaction and function of systems embodied in the performers bodies or created as structures on the performance site. www.eilitmarom.com

Helicopter is an artist initiative located in a former school building in Moerwijk, The Hague (Netherlands).
Helicopter comprises artists and musicians with the desire to strengthen their ability to
‘zoom out’ and obtain a ‘Helicopter’ view; a wider vision on the world, to include and to embrace new thoughts and ideas.
The building is used as a platform to develop and present artworks, organize
exhibitions and events, connect with like-minded artists, the neighborhood and other local collectives to inspire, share and exchange.

The performance will be held online. Online booking via a Google form available till September 30th, Thursday. The number of participants is limited.

About the performance:

Running, walking, standing, sitting, laying, rolling, jumping. With family, peers or alone. Vertically, horizontally, on the ground and in the air. Listening to the music tact or to one’s own rhythm. What drawing will remain on paper in response to different type of movement?

The _on_line__ performance explores the issue of the traces left by movement. By dancing together, the participants will create huge scale drawings to transform them later in many different ways. Such constructed event can become a creative experience to tighten the bond between kids and their caretakers. It makes also a unique occasion for unusual art encounter.

Their creative interest is in interdisciplinary, multi-generational projects. Combining experimental dance, visual arts and music, the artists create interactive performances and offer workshops for families with children. The work of the collective is based on the assumption that every participant of the performance – regardless of age and experience – is a fully competent recipient of the performing arts. Their performances include roundABOUT (2017), Moonland (2018), _on_line__ (2018) and Where shapes have necks (2019).

Registration on the following link:

The performances will involve creating choreographic compositions in relation to the nature surrounding us. During the first meeting, all participants will receive a written score as well as an audio recording of it which will be a manual and a guide for individual activities.

The performative actions undertaken will be based on the scores constituting a source of inspiration for movement, simultaneously allowing individual interpretation. What is only required is carefulness, observation, and taking responsive action.

The program is an invitation to compose choreography through active perception, to communal motor practice, to engagement, and sharing the experience of the careful (mindful) body in direct relation with the natural environment.

The aim of the project is to arouse all the senses and to angle towards the primaeval necessity of communing with nature through a non-invasive interaction and care. Care understood in the feminist vein: as care for nature – and more broadly – for the world.

Shared motor practice amongst nature is of particular significance and carries outstanding power in the context of the ongoing pandemic, which acutely affects our mental and physical condition. The necessity of social distancing in public space and transferring our activities online (also this particular event) has brought several pressing questions concerning the contemporary human condition, the human attitude to others, to the Other, and to the environment. This hybrid formula of on-line meetings and individual practice is an attempt to maintain human connections within one experience performed in different geographical spaces.

The scores for performative activities will be prepared by: Ula Zerek and a Tbilisi-based artist invited to cooperate.

The performative activities with the participation of the residents of Tbilisi are a continuation of Within dance: Wrzeszcz, a project conducted by the Polka dot Foundation in the Tricity Landscape Park (Trójmiejski Park Krajobrazowy). Authors of Within dance: Wrzeszcz: Natalia Chylińska, Julia Kathriner, Katarzyna Kania, Katarzyna Pastuszak, Katarzyna Ustowska, Ula Zerek.

About the workshop:

During our practical and theoretical workshops, we will conduct choreographic and motion / movement activities as well as discuss a selection of texts. From the bodily perspective, we will attempt to create a movement and choreography practice founded on the sense of community, listening to one another, and experiencing one’s body as well as on the strength derived from the bodily organicism and biology. From the intellectual perspective, we will attempt to create a vision of a new system, of new strategies of building an image of a woman’s body and its treatment.

During the workshops, the group will read and discuss feminist and eco-feminist texts by among others Mona Chollet, Sarah Ahmed, Stacy Alaimo, and Emilie Hache. Tasks conducted in the course of the sessions will be dependent upon the relation between theory and practice. Choreography is understood broadly: as strategies and ways of relating thoughts and bodies in motion in a given educational, artistic, or social context.

Together, we will take a close look at care in the context of our individual work with our own bodies and creation of horizontal interhuman relations. We will discuss, visualize, and envision what the world and politics, if based on relations founded on care, could look like. We will make a concerted effort to establish a community of women and specify our aims in the social context: how to increase the visibility of women artists, women mothers, and other people with tutelary responsibility. With the assistance of choreographic tools, we will search for relations grounded in respect and care for oneself and the entire group.

Fusing theory and practice, the workshop meeting will enable us all to notice the social dimension of choreography. This experience can be of significance to all the participants “right here, right now”, but it can also become the driving force behind further individual and collective activities conducted in a wider social and political context.

We invite everyone identifying as women, regardless of their age.

Participation in workshops is free of charge. Prior dance and movement experience is not necessary.

If you are interested in the workshop, please send your contact information (full name, email, phone number) at circeplatform@gmail.com

Choreographers and teachers:

Renata Piotrowska-Auffret – choreographer and artist; in her works she uses tools of experimental dance, performative arts, dramaturgy, and theatre. Piotrowska-Auffret contemplates the contemporary world by deriving her inspirations from intimate experiences, real and fictional, embedded in a given social context. She is interested in the perversity of relations between the historical and contemporary body politics, between the public and the private, as well as between text and movement.

She was a priority artist in the frame of Aerowaves Twenty17 and Aerowaves Twenty19. Since 2014, she has started a series of Private Pieces – performances putting at stake female body politics, oscillating between the private and the public. As she describes her works: “I am a female artist, I am a woman, I am a mother – so the polarization of the body touches me directly. I always have a personal and autobiographical urgency to do the work.” As a result of working with politically involved themes, the private pieces have already been created.

Within the Private Pieces series, she has created: Death: Exercises and Variations (2014), The pure gold is seeping out of me (2017) and Flatland of Limp Muscles (2019). Her most recent piece is Danse Macabre (2021).

Since 2019 she is researching in the notion of care in a context of motherhood and artistic practices. She participated in Parent Hood conference organized by Dansehallerne and created podcasts Dare to care for Gand Re Union. Since 2020 she is developing her first curatorial project Institute of Care.

Piotrowska-Auffret is a holder of the Exerce Master Choreographic degree at the Institut Chorégraphique International (International Choreographic Institute) in Montpelier and a graduate of the Theatre Academy in Białystok.

Aleksandra Bożek-Muszyńska — choreographer and performer, improviser, business coach and Russian language interpreter. For many years she has been leading regular classes in contemporary dance and improvisation, gymnastics for seniors, as well as creating her own choreographies. She is a scholarship holder of the Alternative Dance Academy 2015-2017 (Art Stations Foundation by Grażyna Kulczyk, Poznań), Intensive Course at School for New Dance Development (Amsterdam) and a beneficiary of the Global Practice Sharing Program at Movement Research (New York). A graduate of the one-year Experimental Choreography II course organized by Centrum w Ruchu (Centre in Motion) in Warsaw. Her works were presented, among others, in Berlin, Budapest, Philadelphia, New York, Warsaw, and Vienna. In 2017, together with Hanna Bylka-Kanecka, she co-created the Holobiont Collective, which runs interdisciplinary multigenerational projects based around workshops and performance. In her practice, she explores the boundaries between performing and facilitating, between naivety and simplicity, and between finding patterns and breaking them. Excitement and pleasure play an important part of her work.

Living Archive – A creative workshop with Studio Wayne McGregor

This online creative programme is centred on award-winning British choreographer Wayne McGregor’s work Living Archive, which was created using an A.I choreographic tool developed in collaboration with Google Arts and Culture Lab.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn excerpts of Company Wayne McGregor’s repertoire and material derived from ten solos created as part of the development process for the A.I choreographic tool. They will also be able to use the A.I tool to develop their own material and gain insights into McGregor’s creative practice.
The programme will be delivered by a dancer from Company Wayne McGregor.

About the performance:

In collaboration with Google’s Arts and Culture Lab, Studio Wayne McGregor developed the Living Archive — an artificially intelligent choreographic tool, trained on hundreds of hours of video from choreographer Wayne McGregor’s extensive back catalogue, as well as solo material created on each of the current company.

From what it learned about the individual physical styles of an array of bodies dancing McGregor’s choreography, the system was able to respond to any new movement phrase by suggesting multiple original possibilities for the next phrase. Through swift real-time dialogue between wo/man and machine, the Living Archive unleashed the creative movement potential stored at molecular level within former works, amplifying the spectrum of possibility for choreographic decision-making and bringing dancers of the present into contact with traces of their predecessors.
A variation on the Creation theme that inspires Thomas Adès’ In Seven Days, the unique movement vocabulary and visual language for Living Archive: An AI Performance Experiment was generated solely with this strange and elemental new body. Ben Cullen Williams’ design for the work manipulates abstract visualizations of the AI generated choreography into a suspended video installation which explores ideas of dance as code and vice versa.

Territories of intimacy – choreographic workshop for women |

Renata Piotrowska-Auffret

About the workshop:

In the frame of our meetings we will also talk about horizontal human relations and politics of care.

During practical and theoretical workshop we will be doing choreographic and movement practices and develop discussions based on chosen texts. We are going to look together at the modes of appropriation and deconstruction of female victim representations and emancipatory dimension of a witch figures.

From physical perspective, the participants together with artist Renata Piotrowska-Auffret, will create a movement and choreographic practices based on the sense of being together, listening and experiencing your own body and the power which can be awaken from the body biology. The group will work with phenomenas of victim figure and witch figure – its historical and contemporary symptoms. Choreographer Renata Piotrowska-Auffret will propose as a starting point to practice in movement, chosen tasks and scenes from her last piece „Flatland of limp muscles”. It will be materials such as: a dance inspired by archives of historical Dance of the Chosen choreographed by Nijinsky from a ballet „Rite of Spring“, touch practice, „hexing the state“ – from sensation to over expression movement and sound practice, „between shake and pogo“ trance dance.

From intellectual perspective, the group will try to create a vision of a new system, new strategies of building female body representations and its treatments. Participants will analyze four subjects: women’s independency, politics of reproduction, aging female body, body of a women and earth with its natural resources. Every day of a workshop the group will read a text related to one of those core issues from above.

During workshop the group will read and discuss texts from cultural theory, among them feminists and eco-feminists texts written by: Mona Chollet, Emilie Hache, Silvia Federici, Tithi Bhattacharya.

All the tasks which will be realized during the workshop, will be based on and dependent from a relation between practice and theory. Choreography in that workshop is understood in a wide sense, as strategies and modes of relations between body and minds, movements and thoughts in given educational, artistic and social context.

Such a laboratory meeting, which joins practice with theory, will give a chance to see social dimension of choreography. This workshop experience might be not only an important „her and now“ experience but also a trigger to further individual or collective activities in a broader social and political context.

The effects of the workshop will be a video presentation with the fragments of the practice and publication of discussed vision of a new state / change / future. It will have an online form with texts, fragments of discussions, description of practices, drawings, photos and other forms. It will be available for free online.

Bio:

Renata Piotrowska-Auffret is a choreographer and artist; in her works, she uses the tools of experimental dance, performative arts, dramaturgy and theatre. Since 2014, she has started a series of ‘Private Pieces’ – performances about female body politics. Within it, she has created: „Death: Exercises and Variations” (2014), „The pure gold is seeping out of me” (2017) and „Flatland of limp muscles” (2019). She was a priority artist in the framework of Aerowaves Twenty17 and Aerowaves Twenty19.

Gaga is the movement language developed by Ohad Naharin throughout many years, parallel to his work as a choreographer and artistic director (1990-2018) of Batsheva Dance Company. Gaga originated from Naharin’s need to communicate with his dancers and his curiosity in the ongoing research of movement.

Gaga classes are predicated on a deep listening to the body and to physical sensations. The instructions are deployed to increase awareness of and further amplify sensation, and
rather than turning from one prompt to another, information is layered, building into a multisensory, physically challenging experience. While many instructions are imbued with
rich imagery, the research of Gaga is fundamentally physical, insisting on a specific process of embodiment. Inside this shared research, the improvisational nature of the exploration
enables each participant’s deeply personal connection with Gaga.

Gaga provides a framework for discovering and strengthening the body and adding flexibility, stamina, agility, and skills including coordination and efficiency while stimulating the senses and imagination. The classes offer a workout that investigates form, speed, and effort while traversing additional spectrums such as those between soft and thick textures, delicacy and explosive power, and understatement and exaggeration. Participants awaken numb areas, increase their awareness of habits, and improve their efficiency of movement inside multilayered tasks, and they are encouraged to connect to pleasure inside moments of effort. The language of Gaga is in a continual process of evolution, and the classes vary and develop accordingly.

How to Apply:

Gaga/dancers is open to professional dancers and dance students.

Participants have an opportunity to attend one class with preferable teacher and / or all three classes.

To participate please send a short cover letter and resume to circeplatform@gmail.com;
in the subject line please write: Gaga/dancers
Deadline: 7 September
Working language: English
Attendance is free

Classes will be held in ZOOM

Description:

Many people would have perceived personal awareness during this precarious time…
Listen to the shallowness and depth of your breath, the fulfilled sound around you, and find an accumulation of the dust. Carve it into your body so that you don’t forget the moment when your relationship with your body and surrounding is abundant.
Warm-up for the permeable body, and awake sensitivity of inner and outer. We will jump into improvisation with elements and themes. Dance through your membrane to connect with distanced others.

Free attendance

Working language: English
