Widening the circle: somatic improvisation
This class is an invitation into the moment, into mindfulness, and into acute awareness. When we improvise we are swimming in signals, responding in real time to music, other dancers, the space, the audience, and, of course, our own bodies. In widening the circle, we hone our perception in order to simultaneously track as many of these signals as possible in every moment. Making compositional choices in real time, our ability to track in the moment grows, and we gain confidence in designing our immediate somatic responsiveness. Bridge’s teaching approach draws on her decades-long study of improvisational dance with master teachers such as Deborah Hay, Steve Paxton, Lisa Nelson, Manfred Fischbeck and Merian Soto.
